Steve is seen from below floating in red liquid, while his voiceover says, “Funny, I always wanted a pool filled with cherry Jell-O. Well, in the end I got it…” and proceeds to tell the tale.
The action shifts to a few weeks before, when Stan learns that Steve is having a hard time with creative writing. To inspire him, Stan shows Steve over 3,000 books that he’s written, though none have been published. When that fails, Stan glues Steve’s hand to a desk. Roger then comes in, babbles incoherently in a drunken stupor, and passes out, finally inspiring Steve. The resulting book, Roger the Alien, is published but doesn’t start selling until Steve publicizes it by using a “bad boy” gimmick suggested by his dad. Roger and Hayley meanwhile become upset with Steve, Roger because he learns that the book portrays him as a clumsy drunk who goes on delusional rants, and Hayley because Stan spent all her college money on a gift for Steve (Dr. Seuss’ first typewriter).
