The group moves on to take the submarine to escape. However, right before leaving, Jack Shephard pushes the Man in Black into the sea, following Sawyer’s advice to leave him behind. At the same time, an ambush occurs with Charles Widmore’s men attacking the group. During the fight, Kate gets shot. In the end, everyone except Claire and the Man in Black escapes in the submarine. However, all is not as it seems. The Man in Black had left explosives in a backpack he gave to Jack.
As the submarine dives, Jack discovers a bomb set by the fake Locke. He urges everyone not to attempt to defuse it, believing that the Man in Black is not able to kill them directly and is trying to trick them into doing the job for him.
After Sawyer ignores Jack’s advice and attempts to defuse the bomb, the timer stops momentarily and then begins counting down faster. Sayid grabs the bomb and runs with it, giving his life when the bomb blows up, in an attempt to save the others. As the submarine goes down from the resulting explosion, Sun is trapped/crushed by metal bars. Jin refuses to leave her side, telling her, “I will never leave you again.” A scene is shown of their hands, releasing their grip, floating in the water as the submarine sinks into the depths.
