When Roger accidentally breaks his TV, he pesters Stan to buy him a replacement. Stan refuses, and things go from bad to worse: his CIA demonstration goes horribly wrong, he becomes drunk in a bar, and when Roger picks him up they get into an accident, resulting in Stan receiving a DUI and being placed under house arrest. Back home, Stan and Roger get into a fight where they agree to switch places. Roger gets a job as a car salesman, while Stan stays at home and gets drunk.
The novelty of the switch wears off when Roger faces increased pressure at work and his advice to Hayley (she could keep monkeys, which her activist group set free from an animal testing lab, in the house) and Steve (giving nearly nude photos of himself to a girl he’s chasing) comes back to haunt him. He also accidentally gives Francine a black eye, causing the neighbors to call the cops. After the cops find the photos of Steve, discover the monkeys, overhear Stan threatening to kill Roger, and see Francine with another black eye (which she actually got when she tripped on a mop and hit a door), they arrest Stan and hold him without bail for domestic violence, child pornography, animal cruelty and attempted murder. Steve is seen from below floating in red liquid, while his voiceover says, “Funny, I always wanted a pool filled with cherry Jell-O. Well, in the end I got it…” and proceeds to tell the tale.
The action shifts to a few weeks before, when Stan learns that Steve is having a hard time with creative writing. To inspire him, Stan shows Steve over 3,000 books that he’s written, though none have been published. When that fails, Stan glues Steve’s hand to a desk. Roger then comes in, babbles incoherently in a drunken stupor, and passes out, finally inspiring Steve. The resulting book, Roger the Alien, is published but doesn’t start selling until Steve publicizes it by using a “bad boy” gimmick suggested by his dad. Roger and Hayley meanwhile become upset with Steve, Roger because he learns that the book portrays him as a clumsy drunk who goes on delusional rants, and Hayley because Stan spent all her college money on a gift for Steve (Dr. Seuss’ first typewriter). Bullock’s underlings plan a surprise party for him commemorating 25 years of service with the CIA. Stan takes charge of planning the party, which means that Francine is actually in charge of planning the party. However she refuses, as she is performing in a community theater production of Beauty and the Beast the day of the party. At the party, Stan kills (or at least seriously injures) Jay Leno for insinuating that Francine wears the pants in their relationship. Stan’s ad-libbed roast is a disaster.
After Steve begs Hayley for a ride to the latest Michael Moore semi-documentary on the insurance industry, Prescription for Disaster, she leaves, disgusted by the movie not truly being a documentary. Steve tries to stay, but the ushers eject him for being under 17, in an R-rated movie, just before Angelina Jolie’s breasts lose their “coverage”.
Stan is relieved when Bullock announces he has decided not to fire him as punishment for the disastrous roast; instead, he relocates the Smiths to Saudi Arabia. Stan displays crude ignorance about the culture, while Hayley and Francine love how women are dressed like ninjas and therefore “aren’t objectified”. At the house, they unpack Roger from their luggage, who immediately looks for booze, but freaks out upon learning that Saudi Arabia is a dry country. Things are a bit mundane for Stan at the CIA, evident by he and his colleague passing the time with paper football while waiting for a “dangerous assignment/thrilling adventure” from Bullock. Unfortunately for Stan, Bullock has him left behind because the mission is too dangerous for a family man.
Granpa Smith, Stan’s father, is visiting the Smith family. He is reminiscing with Steve about Bette Davis when Roger walks right through the living room to get some Cheez-It crackers, but Grandpa is too senile to notice. Stan comes homes, and walks right through to the kitchen, and other than warning Steve that Grandpa is incontinent, ignores him. In the kitchen, Stan complains to Francine that he doesn’t want to be a pencil-pusher; he is a killing machine. Francine tries to convince Stan that he should be happy having a great family, and suggests that Stan should tell his boss how he feels. When Steve brings home a permission slip to take sex ed at school, Stan flips out and demands to Principal Lewis to get rid of it. But since it is required for Steve to graduate, Stan decides to teach the class himself—with Steve as the only student. Stan proceeds to give an unrealistic explanation that demonizes sex and masturbation, so Steve will not give in to urges. To combat this, he encourages him to take up a hobby, but while wood burning Steve accidentally burns Stan’s crotch. Unable to comprehend what the instructions on applying lotion to his injured area, he calls the CIA doctor, who was in the middle of doing surgery on the Vice President. Due to misunderstanding, he assumes he has to masturbate to apply it. Soon, Stan becomes secretly hooked on masturbation. He uses up all his refills and trades his gun to get more lotion. He manages to avoid being found out by Francine, who feels he is no longer attracted to her. She tries to get breast implants but no size is good enough for her. Steve, who was responsible for his dad’s accident, interprets his father’s sudden reclusiveness as anger and disappointment in him. He begins to do all of his parents’ chores around the house.
