Watch Spartacus Blood and Sand Online.This series – more exactly the pilot – shows a lot of potential in the story department for the series. Wit potential I mean, it’s not restricted in any way, yet.
I haven’t seen HBO’s Rome yet, therefore I might be less tired of this kind of shows than my fore-reviewers. But I’m not new to computer generated imagery and that is what you can get tired of in this episode. These effects are firstly a bit of a copy of Tarantino’s Kill Bill and way to exaggerated and frequent. The everlasting and ever occurring sunsets/sunrises (including a low sun always SEEN on the horizon, kind of blinding the audience) draw the viewers attention away from actors and story as well as the swords or weaponry slashing through flesh and bone in slow motion. Further does the evenly lit foreground fit too well into the overly artificial seeming backdrops.

In order to get his revenge, Spartacus enlists the help of Crixus and the rest of the gladiators to defeat the house of Batiatus once and for all. A battle to the death between Crixus and Spartacus is arranged for the Capua elite at the ludus. Spartacus gains support from Mira who is tasked with opening the gate to the villa from the training area. Crixus resists aiding Spartacus in hopes of reuniting with Naevia. However, after learning he was poisoned to ensure Spartacus’ victory, at the last moment he joins with Spartacus. Doctore stops Spartacus from killing Batiatus. In the ensuing chaos of the gladiators killing the guards and some guests, Crixus persuades Doctore to join him with Spartacus, Ilithyia escapes and has her guards seal the outside door to the ludus, Doctore tries to kill Ashur (but ends up being eluded), Crixus kills Lucretia via their unborn child, Aurelia kills Numerias, and Spartacus finally kills Batiatus. Spartacus vows to free Rome of its slavery.

While he recuperates with the help of the medicus and Mira, visions of Varro and Sura haunt his feverish dreams, urging him to “tend the wound”. Batiatus exacts his calculated revenge, using Varro’s death, by the request of the magistrate, as fuel for Spartacus’ rage and a pretext for getting rid of his enemies.

Numerius insists that Spartacus slay the defeated Varro and when Spartacus hesitates Varro forces Spartacus’s sword down his neck to save Spartacus, who mourns Varro’s death in anguish.
